Utrecht 2023 – Museum Catharijneconvent – Jacobus Capitein
Capitein was born in 1717 in Elmina, West Africa and he was sold into slavery at age 8. He was adopted by a Dutch employee of the Dutch West India Company and taken to Holland at age 10. He went to the grammar school in The Hague in 1731 and subsequently he started studying theology at Leiden University in 1739. He graduated in 1742 on a dissertation called “Is Slavery Compatible with Christian Freedom or Not”. In this dissertation he defended slavery as being compatible with christian doctrine. After his graduation he was ordained as a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church. He went to work for the Dutch West India Company in Elmina. His mission wasn't very successful and he died in 1747.
