Canal in Utrecht
Utrecht is famous for these two-level quays, the lower level gives access to cellars.

Houses like on the left, perhaps I should have said two-level quays.

The Dutch word for canal (gracht) can mean the water, but also the street adjacent to the water. In English canal is mostly/only the water.

Now I understand thank you..
Indeed English canal refers only to an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation.

In fact we have two words: "kanaal" (= canal), which means an artificial waterway outside of a city, and "gracht" (= canal), which means waterway and/or the streets next to the waterway inside a city.
