Yes I used to see them operate at the docks around UK when I was wagon driving in the 70's.

I hope you weren't sucked up.

Nowadays they use cranes.

I used to load from a grain mill in Liverpool and big bags of grain plummeted down a chute to where I was standing on the back of my flat bed trailer.

The trick to loading them was NOT to catch but guide them by a glancing nudge with the shoulder to where you wanted them, a painful experience until you got the knack.

I wonder what H&S would say about it today ;¬)

Not only H&S, most people are more aware of safety issues nowadays.

Compensation culture perhaps.

Compensation isn't very high in the Netherlands, if compared to the USA, but I meant that people don't want to be worn out by age 50, or have cancer because of handling toxic stuff or have lungs full of coal dust and such like.

Indeed, my maternal granddad was a collier and died of the 'dust' Silicosis etc, and I am now paying for the years of hard physical work to pay the bills.

That's why I became a union shop steward to prevent such exploitation, all thrown away now of course by the selfish society.
