Grote Kerk

Grote Kerk
The present Great Church or Church of Our Lady in Dordrecht dates from 1470, after a fire damaged the church building. It is unclear when the first church on this spot was built, but it is possible it started as a chapel in the 12th century.

Good capture of a stately building which is very pleasing to the eye.

The opening and closing sessions of the Synod of Dort were held in this church. The Synod established the Calvinist doctrines for the Dutch Reformed Church and they decided that the Bible should be translated into Dutch. The translation is called the Statenvertaling (States' Translation, as the States-General payed for it) and it had profound influence on the Dutch language, much like the King James's Bible had for the English language.
