Floating steam grain elevator. These were used to transfer grain and such like from ships to the shore. The introduction of grain elevators in the early 20th century led to a strike in the harbour of Rotterdam, because many jobs were lost.

Mechanisation sounded very grand for the bean counters, but not the ordinary working man whose livelihood was gone ;¬(

Same thing happened with computerisation too.

I must be a Luddite ;¬)

Mechanisation and computerisation also got rid of a lot of tedious, dangerous and unhealthy jobs. I don't think there are many volunteers nowadays for unloading by hand of a ship full of grain. The ordinary working man is much better off today.

Only if he has a job, and that was my point.

One does what ever it takes to keep your family fed and warm, no matter how crappy the job,
been there done that ;¬)

It is of course no good to say to somebody who has just lost his job because of a steam engine that he will be better off in the future.

As Woody Allen said: “...my father was fired. He was technologically unemployed. My father had worked for the same firm for twelve years. They fired him. They replaced him with a tiny gadget, this big, that does everything my father does, only it does it much better. The depressing thing is, my mother ran out and bought one.”
