They were all gone today. The flowers are removed so the bulbs become bigger.

Cutting the tulips

Even if you don't want to harvest the bulbs, the green leaves of the tulip should not be removed after the tulips stopped flowering. It provides energy to the bulb for the next year.

Thanks, and you gave answered another question too, for I wondered why there were the odd one or two red Tulips dotted among the lush foliage on another of your photo's, it is because the machine missed slicing off their heads.

It stops the plant from putting energy into seed-forming, I think. A colleague of mine told me that he did this by hand in the olden days.

Winter pruning in ones garden is for a similar result i.e maximising the usage of energy to survive by cutting off dead foliage and stems.
