The GDR preserved some parts of Germany in aspic.

We had that in the town where my wife and I were brought up for when boundary changes were imposed our lovely little town called Willenhall was swallowed up by Walsall, who promptly emptied the coffers and neglected the town centre for over 40 years.

Suddenly it dawned on the 'great and good' in the Kremlin, the local name for Walsall town hall, that Willenhall had tourist value for it was a snapshot in time of what Black Country towns used to look like, and they had the bloody cheek to promote it in their civic literature and on their web site.

Now we may find the old buildings interesting, but for the people living for decades in squallor it was less interesting. On the other hand, it is good that not all plans for great progress proceed.
