Dudley had befriended William of Orange and he wanted to support the Dutch rebels against the Spanish king. When William of Orange was murdered in 1584, the Dutch asked for support from Queen Elisabeth. They even offered the sovereignity to her, but she refused. She did sent Dudley and soldiers. Elisabeth wasn't pleased that Dudley accepted the title of governor-general however and the Dutch quickly grew tired of Dudley too.
