The contrast between the 800 metre corridor along the Thames north and south of the river is astonishing

North of the river in Victorian times was posh and land was expensive, so the railways had to go underground

South of the river was proletarian and land was cheap. It was cheaper to build railways overground

So south London is criss-crossed by railways. It is almost impossible to walk these streets without falling over a railway bridge

It drives one to distraction sometimes becasue it narrows the view from street level

But because this was marginal land, the developers left alone that which the Luftwaffe missed.

And so if you look down rather than up you come across these forgotten Victorian relics and see London unchanged from the era prior to 4 August 1914.

And lots of lovely, contrasty, London stock bricks

Yes, spectacular. Prefer these brick arches to the later ugly iron trestles. Is that lime mortar pointing? Was given a lecture recently on the superiority of this for old brickwork.
