The building now housing this restaurant has a varied history in my lifetime and its architectural features suggest as much variety before that. When I was a boy, it was the Pelham Book Shop, an archetypal bookshop of the age, slightly chaotic and infinitely attractive. After the closure of the bookshop, it became a coffee shop/café and, in one incarnation, was La Bonne Baguette.

I revel in recording social and retail history. The present day chip shop could hardly be more removed from the bookshop of the 1960s.

Well, from food for the mind to food for the belly. Food is food, although I'd probably miss the bookshop more that the Bonne Bagette
