Centenary Poppy - 14 August 2020
A sculpture of a poppy in galvanised steel by Colin Phillips was unveiled on 27 July 2014 in the Royal Victoria Country Park to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.
There once stood in the park the Royal Victoria Military Hospital
where troops were brought to recuperate. Now only the chapel survives, a very beautiful building which incorporates an information centre. For the railway enthusiast, the site is also of importance. Parts of the tracks which carried the wounded to the location can still be seen and an attractive miniature railway runs in the park also.
