Contactless Card CV19 - 29 May 2020
This sign reflects one of the most significant social developments during the coronavirus pandemic. Early in the crisis, it was agreed to increase the contactless payment limit from £30 to £45 and, to everyones credit, this was introduced quickly and smoothly. The move came as retailers and other outlets expressed a preference for card payments over cash as part of the attempts to reduce disease transmission. Concerns have been voiced that this development might hasten too greatly the progress towards a cashless society. I agree that, pandemic notwithstanding, we are some way away from being able to operate a wholly cashless society.
On this sign in particular, I would point out that it is meant to be helpful and informative but its wording is clumsy and ambiguous. It should emphasise more clearly that the contactless limit is now £45. Some people, especially those who still prefer cash, could be confused by the wording.
