What we Risk Losing to Climate Change

What we Risk Losing to Climate Change
Glacier overlooking Fjallsárlón, Iceland—July 28, 2016. The unprecedented heatwave that melted all-time temperature records in British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington provided a fresh and recurring reminder of what is at stake as climate change continues. To date, the recent episodes of shocking heat occurred in Europe on two occasions during summer 2019, Siberia in 2020, the U.S. Southwest in summer 2020, the U.S. Southwest in mid-June and then the Pacific Northwest in late June. Nevertheless, the status quo still stubbornly resists.

I hope that the people responsible will finally understand the problem and are also prepared to take the necessary measures on this problem...

We live in the PNW and the heat has been all but unbearable. Even in Alberta where we are presently visiting it was in the area of 100 alll of this past week.

A friend in BC has described how extreme the heat has been. A lot of people are suffering. And then the wildfires are wreaking additional havoc.

The heat has broken here in Alberta but Spokane and home continue to be very hot. Thankfully, we've been spared the wildfires, at least so far.

It’s really tragic. None of the great heatwaves that have been increasingly affecting the world seem to lead humanity to choose a better trajectory.

I am concerned that by the time society finally moves to address the problem, a lot more warming will have been “baked in” due to the continuing rise in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases.

A great view of this glacier. We had our turn of heat and fires in 2019/2020 summer. Sadly, it's all been shown in the computer models, but governments (particularly ours) are very slow to respond.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the models have been right. Worse, where they’ve been wrong, they have actually understated how extreme conditions could become. And we’re not even at 1.5C of warming, yet.

Parallel to the sometimes extreme heat waves in the regions you mentioned, other parts of the world are the subject of contrasting natural disasters. Incomprehensible, that climate change deniers still defiantly stick to their claims.

Already in the 80ies, the prophecy of the CREE was right:
“Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, then will you find that money cannot be eaten.”
I think, as long as Economy outweighs the climate, unfortunately no politician will dare to change anything ...

We are so careless with our unique and beautiful planet. Now there has been excessive rainfall causing severe flooding and many deaths in areas of Germany and China. We are all to blame, especially those of us in privileged well-developed countries. We demand our rights to visit far flung places, we desire new 'things' and throw away old 'things', we continue to pollute the environment and pursuit of profit seems to be the name of the game unfortunately.
