Scan of a map printed in 1898. Notice the markings showing "coal" areas. The map was created during the Klondike Gold Rush, so it also shows the gold areas. Note in the upper right a shaded gold area above Telegraph Creek in British Columbia.

Lanai Sunset
We lived on Maui for 10 years. During that time, we lived in a house facing east. So we saw (and photographed) a lot of sunrises, some of them other-worldly.
However, we rarely saw any sunsets on Maui. Many visitors to the island rave about the magnificent views they get on the west side of the island.
Well, we DID get a few sunset photos, primarily while visiting friends on the other side.
This is a sunset over the island of Lana'i.

Cruise Ship "Smear"
Taken when we lived in Maui. We could see the ships coming and going from Kahului Harbor, while sitting on our lanai. This was the "Pride of Hawai'i", leaving the harbor. We did not have any fancy digital camera at the time, so just set a long shutter and let the ship make a "smear".

San Francisco at Night

Taken from our cruise ship as the sun set on this amazing scene. We had a Kodak point-and-shoot with no low-light capability, so set the shutter to 1/4 second. Use the railing of the ship to brace.
