Hatton Locks

Hatton Locks
canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/hatton-locks

Hatton's famous 'stairway to heaven' flight of 21 locks has a fascinating history. State of the art locks were built at Hatton to fight off stiff competition from the roads and railways and widened in the 1930s. When the locks were completed, bands played and crowds gathered to watch the Duke of Kent arrive by boat and cut the ribbon.
Today Hatton Locks is a lovely peaceful location to watch the colourful narrowboats as they move through this flight on the Grand Union Canal and if that's too much excitement why not enjoy a picnic along the towpath.

Rosalyn Hilborne, Erhard Bernstein, Narvik 08, and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Hi Steve

Thank you for your visit, and keen observation. I don't think ipernity holds the picture in enough detail, but the tower in the distance is St Mary's church in Warwick. As I have said to Nick below, the time to get through all the locks makes this 'non viable' for a weekend out on the boat, so I reckon everyday is pretty quiet. However the towpath is very popular with dog walkers and the like.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your very wise comment, coming from a man who knows all about canals...
Just thinking how long it takes for passing through each lock, especially going up hill, and there are 21 of them.. Practically a whole day!!!

Glad you like the picture though!

My Dear Füsun,

I am so pleased that you like it! Thank you so much.
Canals came before the railways, and helped to make Britain great...!
Of course you will remember Pontcysyllte and Llangollen canals, also Stourport..

Love Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the information. I would love to have a picnic along the canal :)
The Caen Hill locks on the K&A just beat this at 29! I have to admit we went in the opposite direction when we were on the canal last year! A super shot.

Best wishes, Rosa.

Hi Rosa,

Thank you so much for your kind consideration of the canal scene here! I must admit that I don't know the K&A, other than from your gallery. I am sure that you could share a lot of wine with the other boats in all those locks!!

Best wishes
Peter
