Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Nick Weall clubA happy scene indeed, mainly due to it being the only few minutes of sun that day.
The village school children had been dancing earlier, dressed up in period costume.

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Amelia clubWhen I was in primary school 'volunteers' were sought, which was inevitably just the super swot girls. The boys thought it sissy to get dressed up and dance. Hence in our school no boys tangled the ribbons!
All credit to the children who did dance here, nobody tangled the ribbons!

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Marie-claire GalletAn English village green, but perhaps you have this tradition in France too? Possibly on a different date?

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to SteI suppose along with the Maypole, a few other similar traditions are on the way out too, like wearing a smock and leaning against a five bar gate (blade of grass in mouth) going "OOOH ARRRR".
More particularly, look at the character on the extreme left.. www.google.co.uk/search?q=blacked+up+morris+dancers&rlz=1C1RNPN_enGB406&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiKlp3NkdLTAhUDM8AKHUFhADcQsAQIYg&biw=1024&bih=628
Sooner or later the PC brigade will stop that too!!!
(Then one day even the May Queen might be a young lad....... Enough said!!!!!!!)

We went to see one once, somewhere in Hertfordshire, I think. That morning, the fiercest storms and hail in half a century put paid to any such merrymaking!. I still haven't seen maypole dancing and the fact that I live in Spain now has somewhat reduced that pissibolity!
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Andy Rodker clubSorry I missed this last night.
The blue sky is deceptive, it only lasted 10 minutes in between clouds, with a bit of rain too.
I am sure that in Spain there are some better spectacles, like wild bulls running through the streets!!!

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to ╰☆☆June☆☆╮ clubI guess with all the housing developments destroying the villages, elf n safety, plus 'multicultural Britain', these good English traditions will slowly disappear.
None the less, I am pleased that you have enjoyed it!
Best Wishes

Enjoyed in EXPLORE ..
Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Peggy C clubEntry here is only to the village school children (and adults), so you can still come and give it a go!
best Wishes
