Storm imminent.

Hospital de Maudes, Madrid. In fact the storm had swirled about and come and gone a couple of times that day but this third revisit turned out to be the big one. I got home just in time!

Puente de Toledo, Madrid

Looking down to the Rio Manzanares (almost dry at this time of year) and towards the Millennium Bridge. This is a new walkway and pedestrian area following the river. 15 years ago this was a motorway but it has been cleverly buried beneath the river.

Sol mainline station, Madrid

20 Apr 2012 11 4 248
Sol station was on the original Metro line 1 (100 years anniversary this year). I knew it well from the 1980s. When I came to teach in Madrid 25 years later, I wasn't aware that it had also become a mainline station and a new line linked the termini of Chamartin in the north and Atocha in the south. If I'd been aware of it I could have saved 100s of hours of unpaid travel time! DOH!

Elder sister being admired by the younger ones!

There's a strange, predatory looking insect nestling in the top bud. Maybe a wasp of the ichneumon fly type I wonder. Sorry that the detail isn't clear enough but I didnt spot it at the time and in fact only saw it on uploading, 3 and a half years later! Tonight in fact!

Nuevos Ministerios and umbrella pines, Madrid

Once a week I had a class near here and then a 45 minute walk to my next class if the weather was fine. Otherwise a 15 minute bus journey and an espresso with the paper.

H. A. N. W. E. everyone! Puente de Toledo, Madrid…

When built, it was some way outside the town walls but is now a very central Madrid location. A fierce wind was blowing. It was a southerly but it was cold. A very unusual meteorological occurance in Spain! That's why no one else was about! I had half an hour to kill before my next class so I thought I would go for a short and windy stroll!

Atocha

Not the most beautiful of stations; this, the busiest of Madrid's mainline stations, nevertheless it has a certain functional or utilitarian charm, imho!

My other photos of this place have been taken from the opposite corner (which is some way away; this is a large complex!) I live around the corner, 3 minutes away.

I knew I was lucky and I knew it wouldn't last. This was in 2012. I think I've seen maybe 2 spectacular sunrises or sunsets since then!

Chamartin Station car park on derelict land and the Four Towers. Sight and sound; www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cAn98BmUtQ A totaly stupid video and a nonsensical song but I found it very catchy!

It's about to chuck it down again. Better get home…

Outside my flat on another stormy day.

Parque de Santander (1), Madrid

31 Aug 2019 11 10 280
My nearest Madrid park, named after the ubiquitous Spanish bank of course but one I don't know all that well. The reason? There are 5 gates to the park but ALL are situated on the west and the south sides and I live 5 minutes walk away from the northeast corner, so it takes me 20 minutes just to get to an entrance. This seems crazy to me!
