Buitres Leonidas. Griffon Vultures. I was fortunate to get this close. I was upwind and in the shade; it helped!
El Cancho de La Bola, Sierra de La Cabrera.
Photo taken in May 2013, regardless of the exif date!

They only open this fully on the hottest of days and when the sun is at its highest; an hour or two at most. And because Spain adheres to Central European time, this means between 3 and 5 pm! They really are quite small; miniature wild tulips!
Colmenar de Oreja. HFF everyone!!

An attractive town to the south of Madrid, overlooked by tourists, which makes it a pleasant place to visit for those in the know!

La Bola del Mundo in the Sierra de Guadarrama from El Pardo, northwest of Madrid. This mountain was thought at one time by the residents of Madrid to be the highest mountain in the world! It isn't even the tallest mountain in the Sierra de Guadarrama! (Z please!).

Taken with my short-lived Samsung. It self-destructed 2 months after I bought it. The company said 'water damage' which wasn't true. But I got nowhere with them so I vowed to have nothing to do with Samsung ever again. Poor PR in my book!

A hot August day, but cooler than the streets of Madrid below! Fabulous walking and scrambling country!

They only open at the height of the strongest sun and when the temperature gets really hot, sometimes for an hour or so only. I have seen them closed on a sunny and warm day - it just wasn't quite hot enough. This is not photoshopped or edited in any major way. The tulip colours and the grey of the degraded granite were as seen.

A cold but dry January day in the Sierra de La Cabrera. I used to over-edit in 2012, having just discovered a free editing tool!. But even so, I quite like this!
San Lorenzo de El Escorial and blackberries.

The impressive, huge, awe-inspiring yet oppressively grim monastery-palace of Felipe II is a little softened seen through the brambles! Taken from the Roman road.

The grass is green and the spring flowers are doing their thing. But this lasts for 3 weeks at most. The rest of the year the country here is brown, yellow and burnt.
La Cabrera, Convento de San Antonio, January sun.

Convento Monasterio de San Julian y San Antonio. Situated below Canchos Largo and Gordo, Sierra de La Cabrera.
Please refer to the excellent comments below (of 19th November 2016) from my friend Campayo 2016 for very interesting background information.
