Created around the 1130s, Gislebertus' "Temptation of Eve" was originally the lintel of the north door of Autun cathedral.
This large sculpture is now displayed in the Musée Rolin, Autun, France.

What makes St. Lazare Cathedral a masterpiece of Romanesque art is the quality of Gislebertus' sculpture that appears on dozens of capitals in the nave and chancel, including scenes from the Bible carved in stone in a very particular style.

De sa main gauche, Eve saisit le fruit, sans le regarder. Le geste est troublant : elle enfreint, en effet, l’interdit en faisant mine de rien. Dirige-t-elle ses grands yeux vers son invisible Adam ou est-elle dans ses pensées, dans son secret ? Mystère que ce visage ne dévoile pas ...
