Waterfalls and Weirs

HBM from The Dukes Pass –higher waterfall.

04 May 2021 23 36 150
As we were returning down the valley to the visitors David Marshall Lodge, we passed our first waterfall of note here. Another without a name but a nice seat to observe it. See linked photo below for the next waterfall somewhat lower in the valley. Enjoy full screen and have a good week.

Inversnaid Falls

07 May 2021 28 26 167
At the side of the Inversnaid Hotel here on the shores of Loch Lomond sits this most impressive waterfall which is in two parts. The piers, also in front of the hotel allows the ferry and pleasure boats to bring in sightseers to picnic at the foot of these falls as well as taking refreshments or rooms in the splendid hotel where we took coffee and creamed scones. From here one can take the steep road into the mountains and along Loch Arklet to Loch Katrine and also the resort of Aberfoyle. See PiPs Enjoy full size.

The Falls of Kirkaig.

09 May 2021 22 22 181
The Falls of Kirkaig is a wonderfully scenic waterfall on the River Kirkaig, south of Lochinver. This is about two miles away along a wonderful track from the little beach of Kirkaig where we saw deer as we traversed up the glen. In the distance as we walked up, we were tantalised by snatches of views to that wonderful mountain: Suilven. (see PiPs). Enjoy full screen. Herb

Hornby Castle from the River Wenning

08 Jul 2021 26 32 180
Traveling east a short distance from our base near Carnforth we are at a village called Hornby. Walking just near the A683 road bridge over the River Wenning we see this attractive castle. Unfortunately time does not let us have a closer look at the grounds and gardens. Perhaps next time though. See PiP for closer look. "The castle sits on a hill with dramatic views overlooking the Lune valley and Ingleborough. It is set in beautiful grounds and has a garden which is open to the public. The central Keep tower dates back to 1520 but the house was rebuilt c1820 in early Victorian style with splendid ornate ceilings and carved wood panelling." www.hornbycastle.com Enjoy full size.

The gully

16 Apr 2021 16 16 156
A view from last year when we took a walk in quite a different little area just a few miles from here. It’s at a place near Carrbrook Reservoir, just following the little stream up valley and the we came to this. Enjoy full size.

Glenariff waterfall

23 Jun 2022 35 43 126
A trip to the fantastic Glenariff glen (valley) in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. We come across one of three fine waterfalls whilst on this circular boardwalk. Situated among the world famous Glens of Antrim, Glenariff – Queen of the Glens – is considered to be the most beautiful of the nine Antrim Glens. Enjoy full screen

Ess-Na-Crub waterfall.

23 Jun 2022 26 28 135
We are in the ‘Glenariff Forest Park’, County Antrim again. There are three sizable waterfall here on the river walkway, of which this, called ‘Ess-Na-Crub’ is perhaps the best one for getting up close and personal. See PiP for another one. Nice full screen, enjoy the day.

Nant Gwernol

26 Jul 2023 28 23 126
A walk from the village of Abergynolwyn, east of the seaside town of Tywyn in Wales brings us alongside this wonderful river full of small waterfalls and rough clear waters. Our path, here on the left, is actually the one to and from the village to the terminus Talyllyn Railways narrow gauge line. The PiP shows a bigger waterfall at Dolgoch, a mile or so west of here.

Norman Hill overflow

06 Jan 2024 20 22 86
Walking around some of my local reservoirs brings me to this, the outlet overflow from the Norman Hill reservoir. More water in here than usual after many weeks of continues rains. Enjoy the day

Crompton waterfall

15 Jan 2024 26 24 97
We think we know where we live and then suddenly we discover an area of beauty that we had no idea existed until a day or so back. That is the case for today’s winter walk in an area called ‘Crompton Moor’. Only a 20 minute drive from my door, it incorporates an old coal and sandstone quarry, wonderful paths though wooded and moorland scenery and a pleasant small reservoir. Here is the Pingot Quarry scene. I believe this is most spectacular after heavy rains but at the moment I am enjoying the iced grass cascades. Best at full screen. Enjoy the day.

Gordale Scar waterfalls

02 Apr 2010 18 17 74
After recently being reminded of this area I thought it was time to show this. A 2010 adventure for us exploring Gordale Scar in the Yorkshire Dales near Malham. We were supposed to climb up with the river here, like these intrepid walkers but after heavy rains we declined and got no further than this. "Gordale Scar is a limestone ravine 1 mile north-east of Malham, North Yorkshire, England. It contains two waterfalls and has overhanging limestone cliffs over 330 feet high. The gorge could have been formed by water from melting glaciers or a cavern collapse. Wikipedia" Best full screen. Enjoy the day.

The River Wye and one of its Weir’s.

14 Mar 2024 17 12 67
This very nice weir is just down-river a few hundred yards from the Monsal Viaduct itself. Not the best of photographic lighting days but it gives an idea of how it was. Best full screen. Enjoy the day.
