Tretower Castle

Tretower Castle
A glimpse at this old castle ruin in the village of Tretower in Powys, Wales. We did try to find a possible entrance, to no avail. I think this might be the view from the back.
It was built around the beginning of the twelfth century as a motte and bailey castle and this was probably replaced mid-century by a stone shell keep. The castle was enlarged in the early thirteenth century, but later fell into ruin.
Another description reads: It was the creation of Sir Roger Vaughan and his descendants. During the Wars of the Roses Sir Roger became one of the most powerful men in Wales – and Tretower reflected his fame. It became a magnet for medieval Welsh poets who drank its fine wines and sang the praises of its generous host.
Enjoy full screen. PiP

HWW, have a great day.

The description sounds wonderful Herb. Two beautiful pictures. The PiP hides the buildings behind the tower, which I also like in your main shot. I wonder if it is part of someone's farm now, seeing the kind of buildings behind the tower?

All the best, Rosa.

Hi Rosa. A lighting visit as we simply saw this tower whilst speeding on the main road. The main picture seemed to have a shared access to the castle via a farm yard but the words 'Private, do not enter' put us off. We discovered another closed gate entrance further to the side. The pip shows the castle itself better but I thought the walls on here were better for the HWW day. Glad you liked them.

Thanks Roger, there were certainly a lot of castles along this part of the England/Wales border. Glad you liked it and the discovered text.

This would have been quite magnificent back in the day Herb...............and it still looks pretty impressive today, even if it's in ruins. The Keep is particularly imposing.

Two super photos...........both with great detail and nice light. Of the two, I prefer the PiP as it doesn't show the more modern buildings and therefore appears more "authentic" if you see what I mean.

Excellent work and a fascinating narrative.
