Besieged by Herons!

Besieged by Herons!
A remarkable scene taken at the wildlife water reserve of 'Penninton Flash' in Lancashire. Remarkable because it is very unusual to see these normally solitary birds grouped like this. The collective noun for a collection of herons is 'A siege of herons'. They were not all our usual British Grey herons but a few different varieties. As can be seen, a few other water fowl there too. I am in a bird watching hide taking this, surrounded by guys with 500mm lenses.

As you say Jose, sometimes Paradise is maybe not too far away. Very happy that you enjoyed this one. Herb

Thank you Bea, Your comment has made my day! I was quite amazed at seeing this sight, as the main lake just some 75 metres from here was seemingly devoid of all water fowl and birds. Maybe this is their Winter resting place.

Such a beautiful pair of images Herb.............the main image is my favourite of the two, simply for the remarkable number of herons in the shot. I don't think I've ever seen that many at once.

Both images have been captured in lovely light and awesome detail, especially in the reed beds. Some lovely reflections too.

Good to see you getting out and about............you weather is obviously better than ours at the moment!

Glad you like them both Keith. I like you have a slight preference for this one with all these herons but I like the lighting on the other better. A first for me too, as i don't think I have ever seen as many as three in a small area before. - We are making a real effort into getting out for an adventurous walk at least once a week if the weather allows. The first time here for us. - A very please part of the Leeds-Liverpool canal overlooks these lakes. - Best weather in a week and today back to our normal dull rain.
Cheers, Herb

Thanks Toz. Another walk worth looking at here but maybe a long way to ride up near Wigan. our walk encompassed a grand canal walk and a circular walk around the lake here. There were three or four hides and this one the far more interesting one. A first for me too, to see so many herons in one place. Glad you liked it. Herb

Two terrific pictures Herb. I saw a heron on my neighbours chimney a few days ago...it looked really eerie as it was just starting to get dark! Love the colour tones in these shots.

These would look really big on a chimney I guess. that being said, I have seen pelicans on German chimneys before. We once witnessed a heron steal our best coy fish from our old garden pond on Christmas day. - A delightful witness to this scene for us that I am also happy to share with you here. Glad you liked the other picture too.

A super sharp picture Herb'.. and amazing to catch so many Herons at one go.. I have only ever seen them singly.. and thanks for the collective ''Siege''.. I do like these gatherings terms .. and that's a new one on me.. Cheers and 'all the best' from Dave.

Good to see you gain Dave and mighty glad that I have shown you something new here besides giving you a new collective noun. Like you, I have seldom seen more than one in the same spot but I have once seen a big river with a different heron every 100 yards or more -even then only about 5 max.
