he large park stretching behind the palace is one of the greatest treasures of Versailles. From the central window of the gallery of mirrors, an enchanting panorama unfolds, stretching as far as the eye can see from the foot of the palace through a long perspective embellished by the work of architect André Le Nôtre: fountains with elegant sculptures, water features, flower beds and canals. Particularly original was the creation of the 1670-metre-long Grand Canal, which served as a backdrop for numerous festivities and even hosted boats. From 1669, in fact, Louis XIV had miniature lifeboats and vessels sailing on the canal, and in 1674, the Serenissima sent two gondolas and four gondoliers to the Sun King, who were housed in the buildings at the head of the Canal, which from then on were called Little Venice.
Work on the gardens began at the same time as the construction of the palace and lasted for about forty years; it was a gigantic work that required the labour of thousands of people.
