The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts, was built between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor. This 252-foot-7.5-inch-tall (77.0 m) campanile is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States and is part of the Provincetown Historic District. In 1620, the Pilgrims spent five weeks exploring Cape Cod before they sailed to Plymouth, Massachusetts. After spending weeks at sea, the Pilgrims resolved not to set foot on land until the Mayflower Compact was written and signed.[citation needed] A contest was held to design a structure to commemorate the Pilgrims' landing, and over 150 entries were submitted. The winning design, by Boston architect Willard T. Sears, was based upon the Torre del Mangiaä in Siena, Italy, designed by Agostino and Agnolo da Siena in 1309. On August 20, 1907, Theodore Roosevelt lays the cornerstone of the Pilgrim Monument. In a ceremony on August 20, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt officiated at the laying of the cornerstone. After the monument's completion, President William H. Taft dedicated it at a ceremony held on August 5, 1910. The design was controversial because of its lack of any obvious relevance to the Pilgrim Fathers. One Boston architect derided it, saying "If all they want is an architectural curiosity, then why not select the Leaning Tower of Pisa and be done with it?" It was also noted that Boston itself already had a copy of the same tower; Boston's fire tower. The fire tower is made of brick like the Italian original, was built in 1892 by Edmund March Wheelwright, is 156 feet (48 m) tall, was originally designed as part of the central fire station and used as a fire lookout, and later became part of the Pine Street Inn, a shelter for Boston's homeless. However, The Boston Globe noted that "The people of Provincetown are not at all enthusiastic about the design, but are glad enough to get almost any sort of monument," and quoted "an old sea captain" as saying: "I don't sympathize with all the kicking about the monument. It's good enough, and it has this in its favor, that it resembles many lighthouses on the coast of Portugal and on Portuguese Islands, and Provincetown, you know, is full of Portuguese." Tourists from around the world visit Provincetown to climb the monument and view the Provincetown Museum at its base. The monument commemorates the Pilgrims, and the museum pays tribute to Provincetown's vibrant and historic maritime past. Provincetown residents take great pride in the structure. The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is the presidential library and museum of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917–1963), the 35th President of the United States (1961–1963). It is located on Columbia Point in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, next to the University of Massachusetts at Boston, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, and the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum. Designed by the architect I. M. Pei, the building is the official repository for original papers and correspondence of the Kennedy Administration, as well as special bodies of published and unpublished materials, such as books and papers by and about Ernest Hemingway. The library and museum is part of the Presidential Library System, which is administered by the Office of Presidential Libraries, a part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). HFF und ein schönes Wochenende Green Gables (engl.: grüne Giebel) ist ein Bauernhof im kanadischen Cavendish auf Prince Edward Island. Als Hauptschauplatz von Lucy Maud Montgomerys Roman Anne auf Green Gables wurde er zu einer internationalen Touristenattraktion. Der Bauernhof wurde im Jahr 1831 von David Macneill Sr. errichtet. Während Montgomerys Kindheit war der Hof das Zuhause von David Jr. und Margaret MacNeill (Cousins von Montgomerys Großeltern), mit denen sie viel Zeit verbrachte. Für ihr 1908 erschienenes Kinderbuch Anne of Green Gables nutzte sie den Hof und dessen Umgebung als Inspiration. Der Name Green Gables stammt von ihr selbst und geht auf die grün gestrichenen Giebel zurück. Im Jahr 1937 wurde der Prince Edward Island National Park errichtet, dessen Grenzen das Grundstück von Green Gables umschlossen. Dadurch ging das Gebäude in den Besitz der kanadischen Regierung über. Das umliegende Ackerland wurde in einen Golfplatz umgewandelt. Wegen seiner Bedeutung für die kanadische Literaturgeschichte erklärte man Green Gables zu einer National Historic Site. Das Äußere des Gebäudes hat sich im Laufe der Zeit nur wenig geändert. Das Innere des Hauses wurde detailgetreu nach den Romanvorlagen im Stil des späten Viktorianischen Zeitalters eingerichtet und ist für Touristen zugänglich. Jährlich besuchen rund 200.000 Menschen Green Gables – davon stammen etwa 6.000 aus Japan, wo die Anne-Romane und die darauf basierende Zeichentrickserie Anne mit den roten Haaren besonders populär sind.
