I was hoping for an opportunity to witness an anhinga catching a fish. These birds work like you would not believe when they have a catch. This is the last in a series of 3. As the anhinga was beginning the swallowing process, the catfish moved, he began the slapping/ beating again, and kept it up for quite some time. I kept watching and he finally did swallow the fish; unbelievable to see the entire fish disappear down his throat!!. Unfortunately, the anhinga's head was facing directly toward me and even though I kept shooting, I could not position myself at an angle to capture decent images of the actual swallowing without risking falling into the swamp!! This is the second in a series of 3. The anhinga is beginning the swallowing process after literally beating the catfish to death. I watched for a long time as he slapped/smacked the fish against the tree trunk. Then he would stop and if the catfish moved, he would start again to smack it around. He cannot swallow the fish until it is dead. As you will see in the next 2 images, he swallows the fish whole. Amazing to see! Then he would stop and if the catfish moved, he would start again to smack it around. He cannot swallow the fish until it is dead. As you will see in the next 2 images, he swallows the fish whole.
