"Lady Denman"

This former Sydney ferry, the "Lady Denman", is the prime display in the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. It's significance is that it was actually built nearby in Jervis Bay, where two small boat building yards operated until the late 20th century. This ferry went into service in 1912, originally with a steam engine. Happy Fence Friday and have a great weekend, everyone.

The Australian National Maritime Museum has a replica of HMS Endeavour , the ship used by Captain Cook in 1770 to map the eastern coast of Australia. In the foreground one of Sydney's catamaran ferries. See also PiP.

Mekong Meeting

18 Apr 2020 33 23 574
We had just arrived in Luang Prabang and decided to take the ferry across the Mekong River. Shortly after, when we saw the ferry returning, we did a complete "double take" - just look at that car on the ferry! It turned out that the car is a quite rare 1928 Graham-Paige, being driven around the world by a remarkable Argentinian family. At this stage they had been on the road for eleven years, with four children born on the way. They still are travelling, now confined by the CV19 in South America, and have been to every continent except Antarctica. When I took this they had published a book "Spark Your Dream" about their travels to help cover their expenses (it's still available online). A very pleasant and surprising meeting and an enjoyable and memorable turn to our day. (See also PiPs).

Harbour view

Another from my Norway series. The number of what I would call "vintage" ships in most ports was a surprise. I would suggest viewing large. Another image in the PiP.

Sydney Opera House - way back!

24 Oct 2013 5 4 870
There have been some celebrations this week over the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Opera House. Which made it vaguely relevant to post this photo, taken from the Manly Ferry and with construction still having a long way to go in late 1965. The Opera House and the city both look a bit different these days! From an old Kodachrome II slide.
