Another Melbourne panorama
03 Nov 2023 |
Taken on the same walk as my previous panorama, this one shows more of the new buildings on the south bank of the Yarra River. On the right is the "Polly Woodside", now restored but a rusting hulk when I lived in Melbourne long ago. Also new is the long low building behind, part of the Melbourne Convention Centre. View large.
Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, eveyone.
Melbourne panorama
02 Nov 2023 |
Just back from my travels, the main purpose being a visit to Melbourne. This is a stitched panorama from one of the bridges across the Yarra River. More distant to the left is the city centre, the buildings on the right are all new. View large.
Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend to follow.
Outback panorama
03 Oct 2023 |
Out on the road between Boulia and Winton in western Queensland. It's a big and mostly dry and flat country - an ancient landscape with hills that have eroded over the millenia to flat tops. It can be hard to believe that a few million years ago it had a much wetter climate and lush vegetation. Stitched panorama, view large - see PiP also.
Wollongong Main Beach
14 Feb 2023 |
The beach was being well used, with surfers chasing waves and surf classes for groups of youngsters. In the distance the steelworks which come to mind for most Australians when Wollongong is mentioned. The thunderstorm, far away, had weakened when it arrived several hours later. Stitched panorama. View large.
Bega Bench
06 Nov 2022 |
Bega, in the distance at the left of this panorama, is a town on the south coast of New South Wales in Australia. With far more rain than usual this year, the area is remarkably green.
Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to follow,
Henbury Meteorite crater
06 Oct 2021 |
Some 4,700 years ago, what is known as the "Henbury Meteor" weighing several tonnes, crashed here in the Central Australian desert, leaving 12 craters of various sizes as it broke up. The largest crater, shown in this stitched panorama, is 180m wide and 15m deep and now is part of the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Reserve. One to view large.
The new bridge at sunset
02 Sep 2021 |
With the new bridge structurally complete and only the concrete piers of the old bridge remaining, it seemed a good time to show the wider view - best seen large.
Another week has flown by, so it's time for me to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.
South of Mount Lacey
19 Feb 2021 |
Looking southward into the Prince Charles Mountains, this is a stitched panorama of the view from our survey point on Mount Lacey (see earlier image with Tellurometer). The distant range is about 30km away (see map in Location). This is best viewed large.
The large mountain at the far left is Mt Bechervaise, which some of the better climbers also ascended - note the massive wind scour in the snow alongside it (the scale is better illustrated in the PiP, showing the climbers en-route). Images from old negatives developed at Mawson on our return.
Burnt forest
29 Aug 2020 |
Pauline is on a new treatment, which allows us more spare time, so for the second time in over twelve months we went for a sightseeing drive. We covered about 250km, almost all burnt, with only small sections near towns and some houses saved from the devastating bushfires of late 2019-early 2020. After more than six months, many areas of forest remain like this. Stitched panorama, view large.
Wat Xieng Thong
17 May 2020 |
A stitched panorama, best viewed large. The main building (central to this image) was built in 1560 and the kings of Luang Prabang were crowned there until 1975. The name of the Wat means "Monastery of the Golden City". A view of the main entry is in the note.
Fires to the north
08 Jan 2020 |
Looking northward across Batemans Bay from near the evacuation centre. There is a major fire to the northwest, but the real concern was a fire just to the left of centre of this image (I suggest viewing large). This fire threatened to engulf residential areas (including ours) further to the right of the image and helicopters were busily waterbombing. As I mentioned with a previous image, the situation also was helped enormously by gentle coastal sea breezes opposing the spread of this fire.
Milky Way with fence
02 May 2019 |

We were fortunate to have a clear night with no moon, so I was able to get this Milky Way bow with a stitched panorama. Best viewed large, maybe while listening to this. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.
Explored.
Somewhere out there
20 Nov 2018 |
Taken at a friend's rural property, in drought at present. Despite appearances the rain still is 'somewhere out there'. Also a couple of the relatively tame local wallabies. Stitched panorama, best viewed large.
This is looking northward through the area where the Clarke bushrangers based themselves, back in the 1860s, when they too were 'somewhere out there' and the Special Constables were looking for them.
Explored.
Old gold diggings
01 Nov 2018 |
Back in the 1860s, the Araluen Valley was the richest alluvial goldfield in NSW, with a population of about 35,000. The miners turned over much of the landscape, such as this area, in their search for fortunes. A stitched panorama of two images, view large.
HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.
Pink Lakes sunset
Up above
30 Aug 2017 |
Looking up into the Milky Way, again through Scorpio but a dark sky and without the moon (see my earlier image). This is a stitched panorama of two images. What fascinated me, on viewing it, is that no fewer than five satellites/space junk items have left trails. Only one shows here (you'll need to view large), just above and left of Antares and slightly below the centre.
The rainbow
06 Jun 2017 |
A stitched panorama, best viewed large. I was very glad to have a weather resistant camera and lens at this point. :-)
