John Donne, who was preacher of the Inn at the time, and later became Dean of St. Paul's, laid the foundation stone in 1620. The chapel was completed 3 years later. It has been extensively rebuilt several times since then.

The guide did tell us a great deal about the heraldry. From memory, the Kingsmill family (of bread fame) had much to do with the Inn, which explains the 'wheat grinder' pattern you see here

The Old Hall

The Old Hall is a magnificent room with great timberwork. The wooden vaulted ceiling was covered with a plaster ceiling towards the end of the 18th century. This was later removed and the room packs a real punch today

The Old Hall is well over 500 years old; the crypt is remarkably well-preserved.

I'll try to find out what this building actually is

The Great Hall

The buildings date from various periods; this one from the nineteenth century. The architect is Philip Hardwick. There is a rather fine dining room inside but the photos are no good as they were setting up for an event.

On the wall of one of the buildings in New Square; my Latin's not really up to it.
