In St Etheldreda's church, Hatfield, is the tomb of Robert Cecil, First Earl of Salisbury (1563--1612). This incredible monument is a cadaver tomb, with the effigy of Robert on the top level, and his cadaver on the lower level from which this is a detail. The tomb was carved by Maximillian Colt, a Flemish sculptor who settled in England and became the King's Master Carver.

This is from the memorial to Dame Elizabeth Brocket (died 1612) and Dame Agnes Sanders her mother (died 1588). St Etheldreda's Church, Hatfield.
