These filled square holes are probably "put-log" holes, i.e., where wooden scaffolding was built into the wall and then filled-in later. This one is in the south chancel wall of St Mary's.

Chesham tomb lid

I was interested in this tombstone as it is carved to look like the lid of a classical sarcophagus. Those lids were carved to look like a classical roof with tegulae, imbrices and antefixes.
