Last year we stopped briefly here on the way back to our B&B because I spotted the round tower. It was getting late and the church was locked.

This tombstone with its tiny skull and crossbones is in the churchyard of St Mary's, Hedgerley, Bucks. The stone is to Theophillius Hill who died in 1746. The inscription is in Latin which is unusual for a churchyard monument.

Unusual perspective on this skull for John Ive, He died February 8th, 1745/6. The design contains a variety of memento mori: skull and bones, serpent, trumpet and a scythe. Not sure what the rectangular thing is. The missing item is an hourglass but it doesn't much look like that.

Grimstead family tomb

I found this marvellous relief at St Mary's, Redbourn. It is the east face of a chest tomb to the Grimstead family and dates to the first half of the 18th century. The tomb is Grade 2 listed, and the design is described as "an allegory on time and death." It contains all our favourite symbols: skull and crossbones, serpent eating its tail and a winged hourglass. There were also plentiful chubby cherubs.
Hitchin church pinhole

St Mary's church, Hitchin. Taken on Ilford Pan F Plus using an Ondu pinhole camera. I set the baffles in the pinhole to give me an asymmetric 6x9 which would act like a shift lens.
