This bare tree, shining in the sunlight, (it was actually much brighter out than it looks like here), reminded me of the one in the final Lord Of The Rings movie, “The Return Of The King.” This was another camera in my collection that I didn’t think I would ever be able to use. Kodak stopped making film for it in the mid-1980s, and the special “J” battery they used is also no longer made. But I did have an old, empty cartridge that I loaded with some 120 film and managed to get it to take a picture. Without the battery, the shutter only had one speed and it was much too fast for the 400 speed film I used. The original film had an ASA rating of 150, so 400 should have been plenty enough speed, but it wasn’t. The camera really needs the battery so that it can set the right shutter speed. One thing I haven’t tried is to push some 400 speed film to 800 or 1600 and see if that works better. The negative for this image came out almost blank, it was so faint. By having to darken it up so much, it came out much too grainy. It looks like a picture from the 1800s! But I did get the camera to produce an actual image. A Harley-Davidson sticker on the back of my motorhome. Riding motorcycles could also be like the R.V. life and motoring along the open roads. They don’t make film for these cameras any more, and I never shot with one in the first place. So, I have no idea what kind of film it was or what it looked like, or whether it came in a cartridge or pack. I built up the edge of the film plane a little bit by cutting some thin strips of cardboard to glue along where the “negative” area was. I’m pretty sure that, since it was an instant film camera, the film didn’t rest right on those ridges. Most likely a little way off them to achieve the right focus. I used two thinknesses of cardboard on both the top and bottom where the negative sat, but I should have used only one thickness on each side, because the focus is off. The area where the film rides was also slightly smaller than the height of the film gate, so I had to trim a little of the film to get it to fit inside the camera. I ended up cutting through the sprocket holes on one side to get it to fit. But, I got it to produce a picture. This historical marker details about the man who founded Eldorado, Illinois. It was almost impossible to get to use this camera. Film is no longer made for it by anyone and nobody even makes the special "J" battery it takes. But I said almost impossible. I happened to have an old, empty instant film cartridge these used and was able to put some cut-down 120 film into it and get it to work. The things we photographers have to do sometimes! I was out shooting with several different cameras yesterday and came upon this statue late in the afternoon. The lighting was perfect as the sun was just setting. It's a statue dedicated to children who died young. Surrounding the statue are individual bricks, each dedicated to a child who has died. Some of the words on the bricks were quite touching and sentimental. I found out that this Polaroid Colorpack II uses the same film as my Polaroid Land Camera Automatic 230. And I may have other Polaroid instant cameras that use the same size film.

I picked this one up a couple years back only because I used to have one in the 1970's and no longer had my original camera.

I bought one of these brand new back in 1977, but have long since lost it to time. I found this one at a resale shop and picked it up for sentimental reasons.

These are the Urreas, Joe and Lily with their daughter Debbie between them. They were our friends and neighbors when my family lived out in Safford, Arizona. Here they are pictured when we went on a family vacation back out to Arizona to visit them in 1977. Joe passed away several years back and their daughter Debbie died of suicide, but we still have contact with Lily and exchange calls often. Taken with my Kodak Handle, circa 1978. Whoever created the late movie concept sure came up with a winner. I just found the picture today after having stored it away for all these years. I'd say that I only shot two packs, or 20 images, at the most with this camera back then. The local station, WTVW 7 out of Evansville, Indiana, has usually had a late, late movie in it's lineup.

This was my Great Uncle Vernon and my Dad in 1977. Vernon always made like he was a boxer, so Dad always played along. Vernon had quite a history and, in fact, used to be a cook on a chuck wagon back in the cattle drive days of the Southwest. Taken with a Kodak Handle instant camera in August, 1977, on our way back from a family vacation in Arizona. what happened here was that the flash cubes, tall, two-bulb-wide by five-bulb-high units, didn't go off so the two subjects were only backlit by the light coming in the window. I'd always considered this photo a failure because the flash didn't go off and expose it properly and I took a second one where the flash went off and the picture turned out perfect. But, looking at this one now, in a new light, it's kind of artistic looking after all. So maybe it wasn't a failure after all! This is an artist's conception of my first Kodak instant camera - The Handle. I bought it back in the Summer of 1977 to use on a family vacation. As I recall, the handle that cranked out the pictures broke off after a couple years. It's called "The Handle," but it's got two handles, a hand crank and the thing you grip on the other side. I wonder which handle was intended as the title of the camera?
