"Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471, as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami (a descendant of Ibn Machich and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad) to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times. In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962). (After defeating him with the help of the French, Abd el-Krim was deported to Réunion in 1926.) Spain returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chefchaouen AIMG 8084

"Michael Thonet (1796-1871), German, is considered the inventor of the process of bentwood production, characterized by flowing forms and the resulting lightweight product. Michael Thonet opened his furniture cabinetry workshop in 1819 in a rural Austrian town and in 1830 he experimented with bending steamed wood to create furniture. He founded the the Austrian company 'Gebrueder Thonet' in 1853. In 1856 he received a patent for the process of bentwood manufacturing. Thonet and his five sons began to produce innovative 'bentwood' furniture, which became known for being practical, inexpensive and refined. The Thonet family had 52 assembly-line production factories in Europe by 1900, and was the world's major manufacturer of bentwood furniture. His patents for the process expired in 1869, and imitations still abound." www.designboom.com/eng/education/rocking/modern.html The Sunday Challenge: chairs TSCIMG 8354

Promenade des Anglais

The Promenade des Anglais ("Promenade of the English") is a promenade that stretches along the Baie des Anges in the Mediterranean Sea at Nice, France. In the latter part of the 18th century, there was an English influx during the winter months in Nice, A number of the wealthier ones proposed and funded a project to build a promenade as a walkway which would separate the pebble beach from the houses on higher ground.
