Gallup, NM Ford Anglia (# 0454)

Ford Anglia from the mid-1960's, over a junk yard in Gallup, NM. Since my childhood was spent near a fairly major port, it wasn’t unusual to see a wide variety of imports such as the Anglia around town in the 1960’s. I’m always, though, surprised to find them in parts of inland U.S. where there probably wasn’t very much in terms of imported car dealers or mechanics -- except possibly for sports cars. (Though I should acknowledge that my first cross-country trip was in 1967 in a 1963 VW.)

Close-ups of the insignia on the 1954 Nash Ambassador -- the Nash emblem. Nash cars were popular in my family when I was a child, so this brings back memories.

Palm Springs auto show American (0234)

1962 Rambler American convertible, at Palm Springs auto show. Continuing the family preference for the less popular makes, we had at least four different Ramblers including a convertible (a Classic, not an American) that my mother bought when she was in her late 50's. In the 1980's when I was living in Boston and needed a beatup older car for navigating their rough winters, I had a used AMC Concord which was wonderful.

1961 Chevrolet Greenbrier. The Greenbrier was a van based on the Corvair. I owned one, briefly -- it was a mistake.

1963 Corvair Convertible, at Palm Springs auto show. One of my brothers had a Corvair of this generation, I had one of the next generation.

1958 Studebaker President. My family, having a preference for unusual cars, had a number of Studebakers -- though none as elegant as this. In my senior year of high school I had, for a few months, a very used Studebaker for going to work.

Palm Springs auto show Fairlane (0230)

1956 Ford Fairlane, at an auto show in Palm Springs. I always thought these were particularly elegant lines for a non-luxury car.

Seemingly very much out-of-place for the auto show, an unrestored Ford truck from some time in the 1940's. I initially thought this was an International Harvester, but in the chrome line on the front of the hood you can see "Ford."

Palm Springs auto show Falcon (0228)

Mid-60's Ford Falcon convertible, at an auto show in Palm Springs. Brings back memories of a similar Falcon (not convertible) that a friend had and we would take to his parent's lake cabin.
