Un saunier (ou paludier) est un travailleur récoltant le sel dans les marais salants. Le mot de "saunier" désigne aussi historiquement les récoltants de sel travaillant dans des sauneries où ils obtenaient le sel en chauffant l'eau sur des feux de bois. A salt worker is a worker harvesting salt in salt marshes. The word "salt worker" also refers historically to harvesters of salt working in salt factories, where they obtained salt by heating water on wood fires.

Le passage du Gois est un passage maritime de 4,2 km reliant le continent à l'île de Noirmoutier. Utilisé depuis le XVIIIe siècle, il était la seule voie carrossable jusqu'en 1971, date de la construction d'un pont. Aujourd'hui fréquenté par les ostréiculteurs locaux, de nombreux pêcheurs à pied et des touristes, le Gois est un lieu insolite. Des balises-abris jalonnent le passage de ce passage submersible, permettant ainsi aux imprudents surpris par la marée montante de se hisser et d'attendre son retrait (voir PiP). HERE THE ROADS ENDS (AT HIGH TIDE). The "Passage du Gois" is a 4,2 km passage in the sea, connecting the continent to the Noirmoutier Island. It is used since the 18th century and was the only driveway until 1971, date of the construction of a bridge. Today frequented by local oyster farmers, many fishermen on foot and tourists, the Gois is an unusual place to see. Beacons-shelters mark the passage of this submersible way, thus allowing the imprudent ones surprised by the rising tide to hoist themself up and to wait for the withdrawal of the tide (see PiP's).

The "Vieux Château" (14th C) is a fortress standing on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the sea. It was built at the dawn of the 100-Years-War and had to withstand the repeated assaults that have marked its history. Hergé was inspired by it in the design of the Tintin adventures comic "The Black Island".
