Diese beiden balzenden großen Schmetterlinge habe ich im Steigerwald an einer Waldlichtung beobachtet und fotografiert. Die Art ist klar: Kaisermantel (Argynnis paphia) . Sie gehören zu den größten Tagfaltern in Mitteleuropa mit einer Flügelspannweite bis 65 mm. Im Bild befindet sich das Männchen vorne . Mit Duftstoffen aus den Duftschuppen (siehe Notiz 1) wird das Weibchen angelockt und paarungsbereit. Das Männchen ist stärker ockergelb gefärbt als das Weibchen, das sich weiter hinten befindet , unauffälliger gefärbt ist und keine Duftschuppen besitzt (siehe Notiz 2). Zur Synchronisation der Balz gibt aber auch das Weibchen Duftstoffe ab. Die beiden Kaisermäntel im Bild befinden sich kurz vor der Kopulation. The female is attracted and ready to mate with scents from the scent scales (see note 1). The male is more ocher colored than the female, which is further back , less conspicuously colored and has no scented scales (see note 2). The caterpillars that emerge from the eggs overwinter and eat violet leaves only the following year.
