Der Wassersalat stammt aus Süßwässern der Tropen und Subtropen und wird gerne in Süßwasseraquarien eingesetzt. Die EU hat ihn auf die Liste invasiver Arten von unionsweiter Bedeutung gesetzt und die Haltung ab August 2024 verboten.
