18 Oct 2025 4 1 18
The town's name derives from Latin "caput stagnum" - referring to the fact that the town sat at the head of a large saline and shallow lake The crusading armies passed the town after the sack of Béziers in 1209 en route for Carcassonne - and in 1356 suffered under the armee of 1356 Edward the Black Prince. The massive Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne dominates Capestang. A Romanesque church from the 11th century was replaced in the 13th/14th centuries by the Gothic collegiate church, which was never completed due to the plague and lack of funds.

Le Pouget - Sainte-Catherine

From the 14th century onward, this church replaced the old Romanesque church as a parish church. The Gothic church has a characteristic floor plan with a single nave covered by a pointed barrel vault and a polygonal apse with ribbed vaulting and external buttresses. In the 19th century, two side chapels were added, forming a transept, followed by a west bay with a monumental neo-Gothic façade. The choir

Saint-Jean-de-Fos - Pont du Diable

Years ago, when I was hiking from Arles to Puente de Reina, I passed through here on my way to Saint-Guilhelm-de-Désert. It was really hot, and this lake, at the mouth of the Hérault Gorge, saved the day. The beach is a bit rocky, but the water is fantastic, and once you've crossed under the Pont du Diable (in the backdrop), you can swim quite far into the gorge against the current.

In 1088, the existing parish was transferred to the nearby Benedictine monastery of Gellone (= Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert), which built a priory church here, probably consecrated around 1100. The Church of St. Martin is one of the few buildings in Europe with triconch or trefoil plan, consisting of three apses around the crossing. The nave

In 1088, the existing parish was transferred to the Benedictine monastery of Gellone (= Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert) which built a priory church here. During the 12th century, disputes arose between the priory and the local lord family, which culminated in the construction of a wall to separate the priory from the village. This means, that even today, the churchj can be reached through this "tunnel".

A donjon, dating back to Carolingian times, towers over Roquebrun, that has a nice panorama. The Orb river is a public swimming pool.
