Capestang - Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne (PiP)

Capestang - Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne (PiP)
The town's name derives from Latin "caput stagnum" - referring to the fact that the town sat at the head of a large saline and shallow lake

The crusading armies passed the town after the sack of Béziers in 1209 en route for Carcassonne - and in 1356 suffered under the armee of 1356 Edward the Black Prince.

The massive Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne dominates Capestang.
A Romanesque church from the 11th century was replaced in the 13th/14th centuries by the Gothic collegiate church, which was never completed due to the plague and lack of funds.
