The Stockton & Darlington Railway built this bridge in 1824 to cross the River Skerne, and it is still in use ! [the wing walls / abutments are later]. It was cleaned and cleared of vegetation in 2020. It carries the A1231 over the River Wear, between Pallion and Castleton to the west of Sunderland. The form consists of a two span cable-stayed structure and is 1102 ft [336m] in length. The central A-frame - The "Spire" - was fabricated in Ghent [Belgium], and was raised in February 2017; it is 344 ft [105m] in height. This pair of modern concrete viaducts, carrying road & rail routes across the Afon Dwyryd. Which replaced a grade II listed wooden viaduct, which was demolished in 2013 [after it was rumoured that proposals to keep the road section for pedestrians / cyclists had been accepted]. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_Briwet during construction work, there were incidents of scouring to the river bed, and partly as a result of that erosion, pylons had to be demolished.
