Very fine twin stone arch bridge over the River Wansbeck in Mitford, Northumberland. It rained heavily yesterday [Saturday] of the river level is quite high. [Best of several attempts]

Looking north[ish] from by the suspension bridge, the third bridge carries the local street - Thomas Telford Rd - over the River Esk.

Boatford Bridge, over the River Esk - built to allow mill workers a shorter commute. Known locally as the "spring" bridge - and it does bounce a bit under pedestrians ! Cat "B" listed :- 1871 pedestrian suspension bridge designed by Messrs Herneulewiczs and Co, London, collapsed on opening day. Present steel suspension bridge constructed also presumably 1871 re-using original open-worked pylons with finials. Walkway parapets are open fencing, the deck timbers replaced and ramped walkway asphalted 1985.

This sturdy stone bridge - single arch - crosses the River South Tyne gorge at Crossgill.

One of the lower cascade series, a little way below the main force, on Ashgill Beck [Ash Gill], before it gets to the River South Tyne. The plant with the white / cream flower spike is meadowsweet. You cross over using this bridge and climb a little way further up to the main Force, just visible under the road bridge in the distance.

To me, those look suspiciously like very old railway sleepers - the four holes corresponding to the bolts for the chair that held the rail. They form a remarkably solid bridge over a tiny trickle of water making it's way into the South Tyne - which is just to the side in a deep gorge.

This 4-arch packhorse bridge spans some 65feet over the River Kennett in Moulton, Suffolk. It is built of stone and flint rubble with the pointed arches faced in brick, the date of construction is estimated to be 14th / 15th century. It predates 1532 as there was a charity by that date that was established to cover the maintenance costs of the bridge, funded by land rents. It is now Grade II* listed and in the care of English Heritage. Such bridges are intended to keep people & goods dry when the alternative of crossing through a ford might mean damage from getting wet. This one is on the well-travelled route between Bury-St-Edmunds and Cambridge, and can still be used by walkers today. To allow cars to ford the stream, a concrete surface has been laid - on the depth marker the top mark is 3ft - and the Kennett has a culvert to keep the modest flows away from the piers. The roadway pad has been extended under the arches, which allows foot access and would also provide some scour protection. However, at least in the current near-drought conditions, the Kennett is a shallow shadow of it's former self.

Packhorse Bridge, probably dating from the 18th Century, over the Mosedale Beck [Behind the Wasdale Head Inn - formerly the Wast Water Hotel]. Grade II listed. It is a segmental arch of approximately 15ft span, built from vertical slabs. The concreted walkway is without parapets and about 3ft wide.

The wooden Penmaenpool bridge spans the Afon Mawddach, one of the most scenic estuaries in Wales, not far from Dolgellau. Over bridge on the Alston to Haltwhistle [standard gauge] branch line - now the "South Tyne Trail" footpath ... this section has a tarmac surface, good drainage ditches and plenty of vegetation with some large trees. That's Bella the Collie coming back to see why we are walking so slowly !
