avr[25] - Gloucester

06 Sep 2025 103
Not an expert on bogies, but this is a chunky example. Gloucester across the top and Hyde and BR 1962 on the sloped parts. Looking at database :- ws.rhrp.org.uk/WagonSurvey/displayvehicle.php?Ref=5M7WCSUI9N2PT6B1AYG8

avr[25] - Coffeeeeee !

06 Sep 2025 1 117
I need another cup of coffee ... Pumphrey's do very good coffee, the company can trace itself back to 1750 [!] and wins awards. [they are based in Blaydon-on-Tyne]. This is on the counter front in the buffet at Lionheart ... during the day we had a couple of rounds of tea and coffees, the first with cakes and the second with bacon baps/rolls/buns. Highly recommended !

avr[25] - etched window design

06 Sep 2025 95
This is the "privy" window in NER 41 [Officer's Saloon] ... Whether this is the original etched design or a replacement in safety glass, I don't know.

avr[25] - model railway

06 Sep 2025 100
Yes, that is a model railway layout, with the train whipping round at a decent clip ... [no idea of the scale ...] [Z or the even smaller T ???]

4-wheel ventilated 12T van - [SR S 49102 Goods Van, built in 1937 at Ashford] - carrying a fictitious W D livery. looking at database :- ws.rhrp.org.uk/WagonSurvey/displayvehicle.php?Ref=5M7WCSUI9N2PT6B1AYG8

avr[25] - mini engine

06 Sep 2025 1 111
Steam locomotive [ 0-4-2T] from the on-site miniature railway. I don't remember if it was running at all when we visited. It is possible that the team that normally run this were heavily involved with the model railway show that was in progress.

avr[25] - Thrunton Brickworks

06 Sep 2025 101
Trolley from Thrunton Brickworks, would have been used to move loads on an internal narrow gauge tramway. co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/resources/view/126406 . The brickworks was started for job creation [unemployed on Tyneside / in Nortghumberland] in the late 1930s. [The actual site is to the west of Alnwick] Due to the building industry recession, it was mothballed in 2011 with a lot of unsold bricks on site. Much of the site was destroyed by a fire in 2013. The flooded quarry is now home to a trout fishery & lodge, and in 2021 planning permission was sought to regenerate the site for domestic housing.

avr[25] - planter & seat [HBM]

One thing I will say for the AVR, there is plenty of seating available - and they are beginning to have a good number of flower / shrub beds and planters. {there several of these repurposed sinks !}

avr[25] - internal panelling

06 Sep 2025 105
stunning wood grain [veneer] on this internal panelling - well varnished, as well.

ave[25] - running round

06 Sep 2025 106
Shirley [12088] making her way to the other end of the train. The track is in very good order, to my eyes.

avr[25] - under the Bridge

06 Sep 2025 117
12088 [Shirley] at the eastern end of Greenrigg Halt's run-round loop. Sitting almost underneath Edgehill Bridge. . For the AVR to work trains beyond this bridge, a Transport & Works Order is needed as a very minor public road route crosses here.

avr[25] - Greenrigg Halt

06 Sep 2025 126
Greenrigg Halt is currently [2025] the "head of steel" on the way to Alnmouth.

avr[25] - arrived at the Halt [HFF]

06 Sep 2025 5 7 145
The train has been here a couple of minutes, and the tail lamp is about to change ends ... There is a 10 minute allowance for the engine to "run around" on the loop, quite long enough to get some good pictures and to stretch legs on the platform. I think a couple of intrepid people raced up onto Edenhill Bridge for their pictures. The Midland / LMS style sloped fence at the back of the platform is protecting passengers from quite a drop down into trees, as the land dips here.

BtC[25] - under the table

06 Sep 2025 107
Bella tucked herself away under the table, maybe she wasn't quite as relaxed as we hoped. However, she was happy to be petted by one of the other passengers.

avr[25] - looooong bench [HBM]

Long seat on Platform One at Lionheart. Bella's looking at 'Shirley' - idling gently - at the head of the short service train.

avr[25] - Shirley {2 of 2}

Shirley - B.R. Class 11 0-6-0 DE shunter, built at Derby in 1951 [TOPS 12088] (carries ‘Shirley’ in memory of the wife of the late AVR stalwart Gordon Hall - who bought it for the AVR in 2012) 20 years working for BR, mainly in the Midlands until 1971. Transferred to Johnsons and used at serval north eastern NCB sites. Came to Lionheart in 2012. It has recently undergone a long-overdue heavy overhaul, the installation of vacuum brakes and been repainted into BR Black, with full "wasp" cab end. Seen here substituting on the passenger service for Renishaw - which had run a hot box on the previous train.
