wst[25] - R.South Tyne flow level {6-13thNov2025}
| 13 Nov 2025 |
|
The R,South Tyne peaked at 06:45 on 13Nov2025, with a flow of 2.99m over datum - just below the 3.10 flood alert level. It climbed to there from what had been a deceasing flow of 0.66m at 00:30.
It was raining heavily [2 -4mm per hour] from 21:00 on the 12th to 10am on the 13th, but not quite sure how the second peak of 2.49m at noon on the 13th fits into the rainfall pattern.

Stood watching for leaping fish [probably Salmon or Sea Trout [Sewin}] for quite a few minutes.
My reaction time & camera responses were just not fast enough, so gave up and just observed.
In all, we saw around nine leaping. Almost all on the side beyond the fish ladder. Not one appeared to use the fish weir ! Several seemed to be testing potential routes, starting what seemed to be too far back. There was considerably more water going over here a couple of days ago.

R.South Tyne river levels 29thOct to 5thNov2025. The various peaks from Saturday {1stNov} onwards are responses to the waves of rain deposited by the frontal systems ejected by the dissipating Hurricane Melissa which passed between the UK & Iceland as a deep low pressure system. {21Oct2025 -> 04Nov2025}

R.South Tyne, water depths 26thOct2025 to 2ndNov2025. These are reflecting recent wet & windy weather, that on 1st & 2nd November is fallout from the fronts associated with the dissipating Hurricane Melissa. The steep rise on 01Nov2025 was the result of very heavy rain overnight and into the early morning.

The first peak of 2.5m on 31stDec2024 and the secondary peaks are both just over 2m on 01Jan2025, this spate event will be from the wet & windy weather over New Year's Eve in the R. South Tyne catchment.

Sharp peak in the River South Tyne late morning from the recent rain from Storm Eowyn on Friday, 24th Jan 2025.
[part of the steepness may be due to the measuring equipment "sticking" after a long period without much change in the flow rate].[chart covers 18th to 25th January 2025]

The water levels on the River South Tyne between 18th and 25th February 2025.
Note that the first rise - on the 20th - looks almost vertical, indicating that the flow meter was being slow to react, and that happens again on the 24th ... with the peak flow a few hours later being just about the 1.1m mark, which is well within the normal range for this location.

A peak flow event on 15th Sept 2025 at 15:45 was 1.95m on the gauge, that is just below the upper limit of normal flows. Note; the near vertical rise in the early hours, an indication that the meter is not really working properly.
A second peak of 1.64m at 03:15 on 20thSept 2025 [and it is still raining on/off at 13:00, so there was a later, higher peak]

The long grass, etc, growing on the far [south] bank by the Blue Bridge in Haltwhistle has been combed by the spate last night.
I've got the lighting badly wrong on this one ... sorry, you'll have to take my word about the vegetation.

On the bank of the River South Tyne, between the two paths --- it used to have a decent view of the river and the Alston Arches, but when the leaves are out, not so good.

Note the shape of the apron, which may have contributed to the situation.
