B&M[25] - Emperor Moth
| 18 May 2025 |
|
|
Male Emperor moth [Saturnia pavonia], sadly deceased. [the grid is 5mm squares].
However, it is a splendid example, note the branched antenna and prominent eye-spots.
Found in the garden after a very cold night, it was not actually frosty, but close enough.
{apparently, the female has smooth antenna, and although there are eye spots, her colouration would be far greyer, almost monotone}.

B&M - Muslin Footman / Nudaria mundana
| 07 Jul 2024 |
|
|
small, light coloured moth photographed on the concrete wall. the wings seem almost translucent.
5 days later [ie 13 July 2024] - further research has suggested that it is a Muslin Footman - Nudaria mundana

B&M[23] - White Plume Moth

White plume moth [Pterophorus pentadactyla]
First time I've seen one of these, sadly, I think that this one has lost some wing length to a bird.
{I released it after taking this image, and it flew - rather badly - some distance away before I lost sight of it}
B&M[23] - drinker moth

|
|
This hairy beast was found sauntering down our driveway, just before a car was due home. Removed for safety and identification ...
Drinker moth, Euthrix potatoria caterpillar :- It is probably about to pupate, given how lethargic it was, and especially with darkened colouration.
Released to some nice long grass that isn't going to be cut ...
note : the grid is 5mm squares
B&M - moth in the hand

Antler Moth [Cerapteryx graminis].
Resting after being removed from inside the living room window, flew away after a couple of minutes.
[added to groups [5 gps, mostly lepidoptra] on 9Jan2023, when only 5 visits had been recorded]
B&M - underwing, Lead Belle
| 13 Mar 2022 |
|
Desiccated specimen found a few days before being imaged, source ???
wingspan = 19mm, which is less than the 30 to 32 I was expecting.
Based on the underside pattern, I think this is an example of a Lead Belle [Scotopteryx mucronata], or possibly the very similar July Belle [S. luridata].

A very colourful and hairy individual wander in the grass
After a bit of a search, I think this is probably a Drinker [moth] caterpillar.

I may try & crop this to zoom in on the moth.

Mother-of-pearl [Pleuroptya ruralis]
{ I will try to supplement this with a gimped / zoomed in version, as these have a lovely pattern on the wings}

B&M[21] - Green Carpet Moth
| 03 Aug 2021 |

What I think is a Green Carpet [Colostygia pectinataria].
It was found already dead, caught in a spider's web in the corner of the greenhouse.

B&M[21] - marbled carpet [4 of 4]
| 25 Oct 2021 |
|
This one was hard to identify. On the basis of the wing pattern I initially thought it was a Bloxworth snout [Hypena obsitalis] but the head is wrong - no snout ! After consulting with the regional / county moth recorder, what I had here was a Common Marbled Carpet [Dysstroma truncata] but with one of the rarer variations in colouring. [4 of 4]

B&M[21] - yellow underwing (Noctua sp)
| 26 Aug 2021 |
|
One of the yellow underwing moths, a little worse for wear on the forewing's trailing edges.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctua_(moth)
Having looked at the comparison images on that Wiki page, N.pronuba is the most likely identification. However, it seems a little small, even under the glass that was used to catch it. After capturing the image it was released back outside.
