nnc[26] - Entrance gate [HWW]

02 Jun 2026 5 3 18
The monumental arched gateway that marks the entrance into Norwich Cathedral Close - the land & buildings owned by the church. . The precinct walls are an interesting mix of clay brick / tile, flint nodules - some knapped , and fine quality stone - both ashlar and carved.

bri[16] - fits under (just!)

Passing under Potter Heigham bridge, Norfolk Broads. A "bridge pilot" is available, but even so ... [apologies for focus and exposure being sub-standard, rushed to get in position and wasn't quite ready for the boat to shoot the bridge]

bri[25] - overbridge [Explored]

Over bridge on the Alston to Haltwhistle [standard gauge] branch line - now the "South Tyne Trail" footpath ... this section has a tarmac surface, good drainage ditches and plenty of vegetation with some large trees. That's Bella the Collie coming back to see why we are walking so slowly !

mcc[25]/bri[25] - Mitford Bridge

Very fine twin stone arch bridge over the River Wansbeck in Mitford, Northumberland. It rained heavily yesterday [Saturday] of the river level is quite high. [Best of several attempts]

Looking towards the southern curtain wall, from near the remains of the keep.

mcc[25] - round topped archway

21 Sep 2025 98
This type of Archway / window was typical of the 11th & 12th century, and the style is known as "Norman" architecture. It appears to have been, at least partially, robbed of the ashlar and is deteriorating.

JBB[25]/bri[25] - Langholm : bridge 2 of 3

Stone arched bridge over Wauchope Water [just before the confluence with the River Esk, in foreground] giving access to Langholm Parish Church [Church of Scotland] and Buccleuch Park.

JBB[25]/bri[25] - Langholm : bridge 3 of 3

Looking north[ish] from by the suspension bridge, the third bridge carries the local street - Thomas Telford Rd - over the River Esk.

hca[25] - outer door

11 Jul 2025 60
The outer west doorway. Round top arches like this are typical of the "Norman" period, and match the founding date of 1150. I can't make out the inscription - probably in Latin ! Above the doorway are three panels, the outer pair probably had armorial badges. The door is, I think, Oak and I presume that it had to be replaced after the arson attack in 2006 which destroyed the roof and much of the internal features. I get the impression that the blackened areas date from 2006.

This sturdy stone bridge - single arch - crosses the River South Tyne gorge at Crossgill.

sds[25] - Moulton Bridge {4 of 7}

03 Jul 2025 77
The brick facing on the underside to one of the arches. This 4-arch packhorse bridge spans some 65feet over the River Kennett in Moulton, Suffolk. It is built of stone and flint rubble with the pointed arches faced in brick, the date of construction is estimated to be 14th / 15th century. It predates 1532 as there was a charity by that date that was established to cover the maintenance costs of the bridge, funded by land rents. It is now Grade II* listed and in the care of English Heritage. Such bridges are intended to keep people & goods dry when the alternative of crossing through a ford might mean damage from getting wet. This one is on the well-travelled route between Bury-St-Edmunds and Cambridge, and can still be used by walkers today. To allow cars to ford the stream, a concrete surface has been laid - on the depth marker the top mark is 3ft - and the Kennett has a culvert to keep the modest flows away from the piers. The roadway pad has been extended under the arches, which allows foot access and would also provide some scour protection. However, at least in the current near-drought conditions, the Kennett is a shallow shadow of it's former self.

bri - packhorse {1 of 2}

Packhorse Bridge, probably dating from the 18th Century, over the Mosedale Beck [Behind the Wasdale Head Inn - formerly the Wast Water Hotel]. Grade II listed. It is a segmental arch of approximately 15ft span, built from vertical slabs. The concreted walkway is without parapets and about 3ft wide.

HoS[24] / bri[24] - Skerne Bridge {1824} [HWW]

13 Oct 2024 3 3 289
The Stockton & Darlington Railway built this bridge in 1824 to cross the River Skerne, and it is still in use ! [the wing walls / abutments are later]. It was cleaned and cleared of vegetation in 2020. In 2021 it became a Grade 1 listed structure, commemorating it's importance as a railway structure - and joining a very select club [only seven other members] as a Grade I listed railway bridge. . there are more details on wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skerne_Bridge

bri[11] - Arch with ivy

Overbridge on the old Haltwhistle to Alston railway line, the Ivy makes an interesting curtain - containing potential nest sites and food sources for various wild birds.

eld - rebuilt

30 Jun 2023 3 1 214
Look closely at the front of this house - the two semi-circular arches suggest that it has been rebuilt from a hemmel. A hemmel is a Northumberland farm building, usually single story, with arches giving access to the sheltered area inside. Frequently used for implements or for hay / winter feed / lambing. Sometimes located out in the fields, rather than in the main farmyard. {Byres are for the animals}

pcc - gateway

The sad remains of the gateway arch over the East Gate to the bailey. There are just a few of the shaped stones left in situ.

wlp - church wall

This may be the internal face of this side of the now ruined church, judging by the shape of the windows.
