CoL[25] - how do they make up the price ?

18 May 2025 1 42
You can clearly see the hike in wholesale costs from October 2022, mostly as a direct result of market & geopolitical uncertainty after russia's aggressive & illegal invasion of Ukraine. Only recently [23rdMay2025] OFGEM announced a 7% reduction in the domestic energy price cap, applicable from 1st July to 30th September 2025, but that is still 10% higher than a year ago [2024] This should see a reduction in household energy bills over the summer. . not my image : fair use & public information

CoLC[25] - UK Electricity vs rest of Europe

18 May 2025 42
Electricity is particularly expensive for UK industrial customers - it is practically un-regulated compared to the domestic market. 4th most expensive in the domestic market and clearly the most expensive to non-domestic users. NOTE : Industrial users, if they are registered for VAT can set the VAT they pay for supplies against the amount they collect as a charge on their products / services. Not everybody is VAT registered ! Personally, I blame the privatised supply industry ... Interestingly, I have seen that an increasing number of organisations are installing solar panels / wind turbines in an attempt [often successful] to moderate their energy costs. . not my image : fair use & public information

UKR[2] - RU vs energy infrastructure and resilienc…

21 Nov 2024 1 98
RU aggression in Ukraine has included massive & sustained attacks on the energy [heat, light & power] and other civilian infrastructure. In response, Ukraine's allies have supplied a significant quantity of standby generators and found means of connecting the European electricity grid to Ukraine ... . clch - UK energy sources

01 Dec 2021 1 145
The UK has greatly reduced reliance on two fossil fuels [coal and oil] for generating electricity since 2005, whilst increasing the role of renewables. This graphic does not show imported electricity, now becoming more of a major factor in the UK. For other reasons, the UK's nuclear sector is playing a reduced role over the same period [primarily, the older magnox reactors are being decommissioned]. . . clch - electricity production by nuclear plants

01 Dec 2021 1 148
The UK's production of electricity by nuclear plants is [June 2021] the 11th highest in the world. Thanks to the "inter-connectors" the UK also uses some electricity from French power plants [ref "Gridwatch"]. I find it interesting that China is now second in these rankings, but is also still building coal-fired power stations. Nuclear power stations are, operationally, a "low-carbon" form of electricity, but this ignores the relatively high Carbon footprint of their construction, as this uses copious amounts of concrete & steel. . .
