Metro carriages, two units with articulation and three bogies were designed and built by Metropolitian-Cammell [aka Met-Cam], Birmingham [I think at Saltley / Washford Heath?] . The first two - 4001 & 4002 - were delivered as prototypes to a short test track & depot at Middle Engine Lane in 1975. The production units differed slightly, and eventually their cab ends were rebuilt to match the others. . Here, one half of 4001 is craned over to meet the other half, which has the middle bogie.

The leading half - with the central bogie is already on the test track, the second half will be craned off the road transport [Pickfords, from the colour] and the two will become one.

Hiding under the lid is one of the two coin-operated stamp dispensers, and some spiders & other muck. We are not amused at the state of our plinth ! [not helped by the current & recent weather] At the eastern edge of the Village Green is this statue of Queen Victoria by Alfred Turner, unveiled on 25 October 1902.

The larger centrally placed memorial on Village Green, Tynemouth, is made from white granite with a cruciform column rising from between four struts in what was an unusually contemporary design for the 1920s. The front face has a sword and wreath carved onto it in relief, with an inscription below, with the other three faces holding the honour roll for those lost during both World Wars, with the 82 names from WW2 being added in 1999. DM O'Herlihy was named as the original designer, but a press report stated that a Mr Steele designed the monument and credited O'Herlihy with preparatory works on the site. It was unveiled in 1923 and still hosts the local Remberance Wreaths.

Another of the "old" cars, arriving at Whitley Bay. Train number 128 being operated by 4050 & 4032 today ie 26Nov2025. Good, I wanted another one. We sat in the back car, and it had a huge flat [steel tyre defect], so I suspect that it'll have gone to Shildon and become razor blades by now [jan 2026] We will be going into Newcastle and changing at Monument, before continuing to Regent Centre, to complete our loop around Tyneside.

Every Metro station has an information panel, displaying both local & system information. The header panel is in "Calvert" designed by Margaret Calvert in the late 1970s. In this case, a street map of the local Whitley Bay area, a Metro System map - including the Northumberland Line [to Ashington] and a fare zones map.

4032 [the unit with the flat] as we left the platform at Monument, changing here for Regent Centre and the trip home after spending part of the day playing trains. Enjoyable as it has been, also sad as I liked the "old" Metro so saying good-bye [Yes, I know and agree they're worn out & need replacing]. The weather *could* have been better !

That's a big yellow thing - I assume an oil or gas rig of some description - being built down by the river. [probably in Wallsend]. Seen from the Metro route, 15 mins after leaving Whitley Bay.

Looking south across what was the riverside bay platforms, you can still see the large slabs that made up the edge, the infill looks somewhat red in this image. The station roof [canopies] covers all but the actual running lines and were substantially restored in 2012. Mosaic mural at Whitley Bay Metro Station. The two outer panels appear to show a traditional family day out at the beach, with the rocks linking into the central night-time scene, to symbolise the passing of time. Dating from 1983, it is by Ian Patience, and entitled "Passing".
