The early version of pay packets ! The indentured child apprentices could earn 1 penny for an hour of overtime [on top of their 12hour days. That's when there were 240 pennies to the pound. Not sure if Quarry Bank Mill also used tokens for a truck system - ie all or part of a worker's pay was in tokens that could [only] be redeemed at the company shop. This system was largely made illegal in 1831/ That cup reminds me of the pay token / pay tubes that a certain Welsh narrow-gauge railway used.

Rather gives the lie to the frequent right wing whinging about how much money "dole scroungers" get in the UK. I would say that the UK's amount is far too low. . Not my image : fair use & public education

That is why the public sector workers are asking for more in their wage packets, what they do get isn't going far enough ... Most teachers these days can't earn enough to buy a house until later in their careers. Even junior doctors are in the same boat ! . Not my Image : fair use & public education

Wage inequality in the UK has got markedly more extreme since the furlough era of the Covid pandemic. The cost of living / energy crisis following on from the invasion of Ukraine has, obviously, not helped. No wonder that some trade unions are fighting for better wages and conditions of employment. . not my image : fair use & public education
