Boathouse

The Packet Boat House below Fairfield Top Lock on the Ashton Canal was built in 1833. The Ashton Canal Company kept their Packet Boat moored in it when not in use. This boat carried mail, passengers and small parcels on regular services between Ashton, Marple, Stockport and Manchester and the journey to Manchester from Ashton took only two and a half hours including 18 locks!

The Macclesfield Canal has a long history of boathouses for storing pleasure boats when not in use. Those on the main line have been removed over the years, but there were, until recently, plenty to be seen along the High Lane arm which is used by the North Cheshire Cruising Club as a base. Sadly the move to larger steel boats has rendered these relics redundant and most have now been removed.

The St Abbs lifeboat was established in 1911 and withdrawn by the RNLI in 2015. Since then an independent lifeboat has been put in place following a contribution of £260,000 by Thomas Tunnock & Sons Ltd. The boathouse is leased to the lifeboat charity by the St Abbs Harbour Trustees.

The Macclesfield Canal once had many boathouses along its top level between Marple and Bosley. With the changes in the type of pleasure boat used on the canals from small wooden or fibreglass cruisers to steel hulled narrowboats these boathouses have mainly been abandoned and demolished. Whilst there are still several remaining on the High Lane Arm, this is the last survivor on the main line and is steadily falling into decay. Another bit of history rotting away. :-(
