Tolls

26 May 2025 1 188
In 1773 the Leek & Buxton Turnpike proprietors obtained an Act of Parliament which gave it powers to operate branch roads including one to the colieries at Goldsitch Moss in Quarnford parish. This remote coalfield was supplying coal for domestic use and it was also sought for limeburning in the kilns around Buxton. A short distance from the collieries this collector's hut was erected along with a toll gate at Bradley Howell. It was eventually replaced by a toll house at the bottom of the hill but has somehow survived, possibly being used as a pigsty at one time. A feature worthy of note is that the ridge pieces are each cut from gritstone.

Sniddles

Derelict house close to the road to Goldsitch Moss in the Staffordshore Moorlands end of the Peak National Park. The site is known as 'Sniddles'. Just look at the size of the flagstones used for roofing. Most of this roof has collapsed since I first recorded the building in 2009.

According to the old maps this lonely house is called Sniddles. As far as I can tell it is associated with the coal mining industry in this remote upland area of Staffordshire. The raised area in front of the building is an old coal shaft, and there is another one behind the photographer. Almost certainly eighteenth century workings in this case.
